Using a Monofin

How to Use a Monofin

Please do not hop, walk or try to use stairs with the monofin on your feet. Put it on once you are at the edge of the water, then slide into the pool carefully. Understand that it may take some effort to get your feet into the holes at first. The monofin is designed this way to hold your feet securely in place while you swim.

Putting on the monofin and mermaid tail is easy! With the monofin already in the tail, roll the mermaid tail fabric down to the monofin so you can see the foot holes and slip your feet into the holes, pulling the cuffs up securely around your ankles. With feet in the monofin, gently pull the mermaid tail back up around legs to waist. You can watch this process in the below video!

How to Swim with a Monofin

When swimming, use what is termed a “dolphin kick,” where both feet move together in a downward and upward WAVE motion to move through the water. Also called a mermaid kick, this is the same kick used with the “butterfly stroke.” Follow these tips to get started:

Practice Your Dolphin Kick
  • Keep your legs together
  • Roll from your fingertips to your toes
  • Push down with your chest

Quick-Release Method
  1. Practice in the pool without the monofin or your mermaid tail at first. Get used to the motion of the dolphin kick with your legs together to propel you through the water.
  2. Once you feel comfortable with the motion of the dolphin kick, put on just the monofin and practice swimming. You will notice how much easier doing the dolphin kick is with it!
  3. Once you are comfortable swimming in the monofin, pull your mermaid tail skin over the monofin and practice swimming in the entire tail while still in the shallow end.
  4. Learn and practice the Quick-Release Method. Watch the video for further information.
  5. Be aware that you will be the center of attention and others are going to want to try it! To ensure their safety and enjoyment, please share these important instructions with anyone else you allow to use your monofin and mermaid tail.

Monofin Care

Avoid Rough Surfaces

Avoid hopping in the mermaid tail or monofin, or rubbing the fabric against hard rough surfaces like rocks and rough pool edges, as this will damage the fabric.

In Case of Crease/Bend

Should you happen to crease or warp your monofin insert, simply remove the insert from the monofin cover and with adult supervision, use a hand-held blow dryer to warm the insert. Applied heat will cause your monofin to become pliable enough for you to gently reshape or remove the crease.

Rinse Well After Use

After swimming, rinse the monofin with clean water to remove chlorine, sand and/or salt.

Monofin FAQs

Do I need a monofin and why?

If you are buying a SWIMMABLE Fin Fun mermaid tail (any tail that is Youth size 6 or larger), you will need to use a monofin in order to swim like a mermaid in it. Without the monofin, you will just have loose fabric around your feet/ankles, and no way to propel yourself with your legs together in the tail. The monofin is what provides the propulsion to move you through the water as you use the dolphin kick movement, giving you the speed and grace of a real mermaid!

Our TODDLER mermaid tails do not use a monofin. These tails are more like a skirt with a fully open and loose bottom, which allows youngsters to move their legs in or out of water, so they can walk around on land and wade in pools.

If you already have a Fin Fun Mermaid tail and need just a monofin, you can order the monofin in the size you need right here.

When you are purchasing a new tail and monofin set together, choose your tail color and size here, and it will allow you to add the correct size monofin at the same time!

Keep in mind, you can always buy more beautiful mermaid tail skins to use with your existing monofin, since all are interchangeable. Click here to buy a new mermaid tail skin.

Are monofins and mermaid tails just for girls?

Not at all! We have boys who love their merman tails, but many boys (and men) choose to swim in just the monofin without a tail, too. You can easily and comfortably wear a monofin without a full tail and still enjoy all the benefits of swimming in it, including the extra speed and the great workout! And for boys, adding one of our Shark Fins can transform them into a wild creature of the deep, swimming right alongside their mermaid kin!

Will these monofins fit any mermaid tail?

Fin Fun monofins are designed specifically to fit inside Fin Fun mermaid tail skins. We discourage using our patented monofin with other mermaid tail brands for safety and performance reasons. Additionally, using another company’s monofin in a Fin Fun tail can damage or destroy your mermaid tail in one use and voids our 60-Day Tail Tip Warranty.

When purchasing your Fin Fun monofin, be sure to choose the correct size based on the size of your Fin Fun mermaid tail (not your foot size), or it may not fit properly. Our dive-grade neoprene and stretchy ankle cuffs provide comfort and flexibility for feet of all sizes. The Monofin Jr. fits Youth sizes 6-10 and the Monofin Pro fits Youth size 12 and all Adult sizes. When you buy a mermaid tail set on our site, it will automatically include the correct monofin based upon the tail size you select.

What size feet do the monofins fit?

The Monofin Jr. fits all children’s shoe sizes and some small adult shoe sizes.

The Monofin Pro fits all adult shoe sizes for both men and women.

ALL mermaids might need to exert some effort to position their feet through the monofin cuffs and into the monofin. The ankle cuffs should fit snug so your monofin stays put while you swim, but remember, with a quick kick and a tug, you can release your monofin quickly and safely.

Do you recommend that everyone get a monofin?

Our monofins are designed for competent swimmers ages 6 and up. We do not produce a monofin in a toddler size for safety reasons.

We recommend monofins for experienced swimmers who meet the criteria outlined in our "Mermaid Tail Ready" video and thoroughly review the safety materials that accompany their Fin Fun purchase. Monofins should not be used by non-swimmers or children age 6 and under.

When swimming with a monofin for the first time, we recommend that users test their ability in shallow water with supervision until they are comfortable standing, floating, and swimming! Please learn the Quick Release Method of removing the monofin before swimming in deeper water.

So, should you choose a monofin for your child? It really depends on your child’s swimming experience and ability, not their age. Once they meet our "Mermaid Tail Ready" criteria, they should first learn to swim with a dolphin kick without anything on their legs or feet, then experience it with just the monofin. Finally, wear the tail with the monofin inserted.

Adult supervision is always required for water safety. An adult needs to supervise carefully, making sure a child starts out in the shallow end of the pool. Start slow until you feel they are ready. Click here to read our full safety precautions and recommendations.
